Student Presentation Awards

Student Presentation Award from SSB

The Ernst Mayr Award is given to an outstanding student talk in the field of systematics at the annual meetings of the Society of Systematic Biologists. The award consists of $1000 and a set of available back issues of Systematic Biology.

Eligibility. Members of the Society who are students or have completed their Ph.D. within the last 15 months are eligible. Applicants may be from any country, but must be members of SSB, and are advised to join the Society as soon as possible to be considered. Previous Mayr award winners are not eligible.

Applicants Procedure:

  1. Create a login on the Evolution 2010 registration site and register for the meeting.
  2. Login to the Evolution 2010 Presentation Submission site. When you submit your title and keywords you will be given an option to declare your candidacy for the SSB Ernst Mayr Award.  To be eligible for this award, you will need to email a 400-word abstract to Sydney Cameron by 19 April 2010. All candidates will be notified of their status no later than 26 April. For additional details, visit the SSB website, student awards link, Ernst Mayr Award in Systematic Biology.
  3. If selected as a Mayr Award candidate your presentation will be placed in the Earnst Mayr Student Presentation Award Session for Evolution 2010.

Student Presentation Award from SSE

The W.D. Hamilton Award for Outstanding Student Presentation will be given to a student who has presented an outstanding talk at the annual meeting. Applicants will present their papers during regular sessions of the meeting, appropriate for their topic. Presentations will be judged by a committee of SSE members.

Eligibility: The presenter should currently be enrolled in a graduate program or should have received her or his degree within twelve months of the date of the annual meeting, and should be a member of the SSE. Talks that are part of invited symposia are ineligible if they are longer than other contributed papers.

Application procedure:

  1. Create a login on the Evolution 2010 registration site and register for the meeting.
  2. Login to the Evolution 2010 Presentation Submission site. After you submit your title and keywords, you will be given an option to declare your candidacy for the SSE Hamilton Award.  To be eligible for this award, you will need to submit a 400-word abstract by 19 April 2010.

Competitiveness: The most competitive talks will be those that can convey a complete story. Such talks are most likely to be given by students who are close to completing their dissertations. Talks that primarily present preliminary data or just an initial part of a dissertation are not likely to be competitive, and we strongly suggest that those students wait to compete for this award.

Award: The winner of the award will receive $1000 and a one year membership to the Society for the Study of Evolution, which includes a one year subscription to the journal Evolution. Up to two runners-up will each receive a one-year membership to the Society for the Study of Evolution, including a subscription to Evolution.

Student Volunteer Opportunities

Student volunteer positions are offered to student society members (ASN, SSB, or SSE) on a first-come basis. Volunteers will work for one full day during the meeting. If you are selected, you will be notified before the meeting and offered the opportunity to select job preferences, but there is no guarantee that you will get your top choices.  Typical jobs would include being a session monitor (helping with computer/AV equipment) or working at the registration desk. Reimbursements for registration (early registration rate for student members) will be provided to volunteers who complete their work assignments. You will be given the opportunity to volunteer for work during the meeting when you submit your talk or poster title.
