EVOLUTION 2010 CONFERENCE IN PORTLAND, OREGON

An international conference of scientists and students will be held between June 25 and 29 at the Oregon Convention Center in Portland, Oregon.

Evolution 2010 is the premier showcase for research at the cutting edge of evolutionary biology, where the hottest science is discussed before hitting the press. This conference is the annual opportunity for sharing scientific research related to evolution. Evolution conferences have been held in recent years in: Stony Brook, New York; Christchurch, New Zealand; Minneapolis, Minnesota; and Moscow, Idaho.  The conference consists of a lecture open to the public on Friday evening (the Stephen J. Gould Award Lecture) followed by symposia presentations, concurrent contributed papers, poster sessions, and service provider exhibits over a four-day period.  The conference in Portland will be the largest ever with nearly 2,000 participants.

EVOLUTION 101: A K-12 teacher workshop is offered to regional teachers on Friday, June 25th. Science educators in the Portland area are invited to join evolutionary biologists and other science educators for “Evolution 101” – a one day workshop to be held at the Portland Convention Center on June 25. Come learn about recent research in the field of evolution, talk with evolutionary biologists, and attend sessions that feature hands-on activities for teaching evolution to all ages.

GOULD AWARD LECTURE: The winner of the 2010 Stephen Jay Gould Prize is Sean B. Carroll of the University of Wisconsin, Madison. Dr. Carroll has a distinguished career both advancing the science of evolution and in conveying that knowledge to the general public. He will deliver the Gould Award lecture at 8:00 PM Friday evening, June 25, in the Oregon Ballroom at the Oregon Convention Center in Portland. The title of his talk is "Remarkable Creatures: Epic Adventures in the Search for the Origins of Species." It is free and open to the public.

THE SCIENCE OF EVOLUTION:  Evolution is a unifying concept that forms a foundation for all modern biology.  Modern evolutionary biology integrates advanced methodologies in molecular biology, genomics, bioinformatics, and mathematics.  Scientists attending this conference are engaged in the development of fundamental principles that will ultimately be applied to all fields of biology for advances in medicine, the development of new pharmaceutical products, and the improvement of agricultural methods for food production.

Gould Award Recipient

The Society for the Study of Evolution is pleased to announce the 2010 recipient of the Stephen Jay Gould Prize, Dr. Sean B. Carroll of the University of Wisconsin, Madison. The prize is awarded annually by the society to recognize individuals whose sustained and exemplary efforts have advanced public understanding of evolutionary science and its importance in biology, education, and everyday life in the spirit of Stephen Jay Gould.

Dr. Carroll has had a distinguished career both advancing the science of evolution and in conveying that knowledge to the general public. This breadth is exemplified by his six books, including The Making of the Fittest (2006), which won the Phi Beta Kappa 2007 Science Book Award, and his latest book, Remarkable Creatures: Epic Adventures in the Search for the Origins of Species (2009), that was a finalist for the 2009 National Book Award in non-fiction. He has served as a consulting producer for the Public Broadcasting System (PBS) program NOVA, as well as numerous appearances on other shows on PBS, the Discovery Channel, BBC television and radio, and National Public Radio. These efforts have made him a leading spokesperson in the public sphere for evolutionary biology. As the recipient, he will deliver the Gould Award lecture at the annual meeting of the society. The lecture, which is free and open to the public, will be given at 8:00 PM Friday evening, June 25, in the Oregon Ballroom of the Portland, Oregon Convention Center. The title of his talk is “Remarkable Creatures: Epic Adventures in the Search for the Origins of Species.”
